Elections

Each year in September graduate students in the Department of Biology elect executive board and committee members for the AGSBS.

2017 – 2018

Candidate Biographies

Andrea Durant

running for: Department Representative

I am a 3rd year PhD candidate in the laboratory of Dr. Andrew Donini. I have studied at York University for more years than I’d like to admit (Undergrad, Master’s, PhD), and have become well acquainted with most of my peers and faculty within the Department of Biology. My research in the area of Comparative Physiology encompasses techniques and concepts from the cellular/molecular level to the ecological level, so I can sympathize with most of my fellow graduate student’s struggles day-to-day. I, too, survive on coffee and cookies from seminars, all while trying to balance TA duties, coursework, research, writing (or procrastinating, really), and constantly apologizing for being late because of the TTC. Fortunately, I am just a few doors away from the many members of the committees who make the important decisions for us, and I am even on a first name basis with most of them (not to name drop…). I deeply care about our well-being and success as graduate students in all of our current and future endeavors, and after recent (frightening, but eye-opening) life events I would like to make a bigger difference to those around me instead of using my free time to Netflix and chill. If I am elected as Department Representative, I will not stop working for us and I will ensure that within the Department our interests/concerns/criticisms are always heard and that we never have to present in another Biology seminar again (just kidding…kind of). Previously, I have been involved in the Graduate Peer Mentorship program and the Association for Research Placement at York, and if elected this will be my first year with AGSBS. Your vote is greatly appreciated!

The Executive Board meets multiple times and as necessary throughout the year to discuss strategies and plans. The team takes direction from and reports their progress to the membership at General Meetings which occur about a couple of times every semester. The Executive Board is in charge of upholding the constitution, advising and providing support to Committees and Representatives.

Reema Rehamn

running for: Department Representative

Hello fellow biology grad students! My name is Reema and I am a second year MSc. candidate, running for the position of Department Representative.

During my 5 years here at York, I’ve encountered a few shortcomings within the Department as well as with their policies, which most of you are probably aware of. For instance, some of us have struggled under our supervisors, and the Department does little to help with this. Or the fact that York keeps advertising the importance of mental health but again, there is a lack of support for it. Having spoken to some of you about the problems you face every day, it is quite evident that there needs to be a change in policy within the Department in order to support our students better. We need a strong voice that won’t hesitate to lay bare what is needed and what needs to be improved on. Hence why I am running for this position.

I have had experience advocating for students during both my undergrad and grad. I was a student representative on the Faculty of Science Council, in two separate committees, and was never hesitant to speak up against the committee members, in favour of the students. I can guarantee that I will do my best to help my peers, and make it slightly easier to get through our thesis.

Laura Newburn

running for: Secretary

Hello everyone! For those who do not know me, My name is Laura and I am a PhD candidate in the department of Biology. Last year, I was the Chair of the 43rd Annual Biology Symposium Committee. Part of my role was to document the planning process for AGSBS records with the hope that it would be helpful in planning future events. I am interested in continuing my involvement in AGSBS in the role of secretary because I would like to be involved in facilitating the operations of the Executive Board, maintaining records, as well as enhancing communication between the Executive Board, Committees, and general membership. I believe my previous experience will aid me in this position, and I hope you think so as well by voting for me!

Myat Ma

running for: Secretary

Hi fellow frustrated researchers, my name is Myat and I’m a second year MSc. student in Biology. I was the YUGSA representative last year, so I have been around in AGSBS to know how things are. Additionally, I would like to drop a Blake Shelton and say that I have won the best poster competition last year in the 43rd AGSBS symposium and so I do know how to organize and present data efficiently. This would help in my role as a secretary. By doing so, the committee next year would also have well-organized data as feedback/feedforward. Please vote for me. Also, I mostly have chocolates to cheer up people if they ever need it.
